Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia is an eating disorder where an individual attempts to restrict food consumption to manipulate his or her appearance. Anorexia is a complex disorder with serious medical and physiological complications that can be potentially life threatening. Both males and females are affected by anorexia. Someone with anorexia may exhibit symptoms of depression, anxiety, have extreme agitation and irritability or have unexplained current medical complications.

Symptoms and Behaviors Related to Anorexia Nervosa:


  • Refusal to maintain body weight at or above a normal weight for age and height
  • Intense drive for thinness
  • Distorted body image
  • Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat
  • Guilt over food consumption, even at normal meal or snack times
  • Rigid or strict rules about when and how one eats
  • (For Women) Cessation of the menstrual cycle (Amenorrhea) for at least three months
